Glasgow Airport Rail Link (GARL)
The proposal is to upgrade 9km (5.4 miles) of existing track between Shields Junction and Paisley Gilmour Street station and to lay 1.9km (1.2miles) of new track between Paisley St James station and Glasgow Airport. The new track will cross St James Park and the M8. A new platform will also be built in Central Station and a new track laid at the Elderslie sidings.
The new rail link would provide a dedicated train service every 15 minutes between Glasgow Central Station and a new station at Glasgow Airport. Trains will stop once at Paisley Gilmour Street and the journey time will be 16 minutes.
On October 9, 2006, SPT announced it had awarded Atkins a £2m contract as Design and Technical Services Consultant (DTSC) for the project.
Atkins will provide a range of services including design, engineering, architectural and railway design. The appointment starts immediately and will run until the Glasgow Airport Rail Link is completed.
The MSPs passed the GARL bill by 118 votes to 8 on the 29 November 2006. The link should be operational by late 2010.
With Royal Assent gained, work is due to start between Shields Junction and Paisley Gilmour Street soon.
On the 17th September 2009 the link was cancelled by the Scottish Goverment due to spending cuts. Although only the actual link to Glasgow Airport was axed and the two new platforms in Glasgow Central and the section between Sheilds Junction and Paisley would go ahead this caused many arguments that the Goverment were anti-Glasgow.
On the 23rd November 2009 however a report from the BBC says that the Airport Rail Link may still go ahead. But this is still to be reviewed by the goverment.
