ScotRail operate a fleet 21 Class 318 EMUs in the West of Scotland.
The 318s were tested prior to introduction between Glasgow Central and Carlisle and also between Glasgow Central and Ayr. A Class 317 was put inside 2 x 318 for a short while as insurance. Eventually 3 x 318 took over.
The 318s were introduced into passenger service on 29th September 1986, between Glasgow Central and Ayr/Ardrossan. Eventually they operated to Largs when electrification was complete. A few years later they started to operate services to Gourock and Wemyss Bay, which saw most services from 1000 to 1500 through Paisley Gilmour Street operated by 3 car Class 318s.
For a short while, there was one diagram which would see a 318 on Neilston/Newton/Cathcart Circle services, during the off peak Monday to Fridays. This diagram was withdrawn when the Class 318 started their first major overhaul at Glasgow Works.
In 2001 with the introduction of the Class 334 Juniper units, the 318s were found all over the former SPT electric network, with occasional visits to Edinburgh and North Berwick in the event of failure of the more normal Class 322.
The Class 318 were refurbished by Wabtec Kilmarnock at Kilmarnock between 2005 and 2007.
The 318s then endured another overhaul starting later in 2008.
Starting in October 2013, Class 318's went down to Doncaster Works under their own power from Shields Depot for relivery into Scotrail 'Saltire' livery and refurbishment. The first unit was 318251 when it worked a 5E20 from Shields Depot to Doncaster Works on 05/10/13.
The refurbishment program was completed in 2017.
The Class 318's operate Argyle and Glasgow Central - Cathcart Circle/Neilston/Newton services.
There were two named units. These are :
318259 Citizens' Network (denamed August 2014)
318266 Strathclyder (denamed December 2015)

Services
Present to November 2010
Half of the Class 318's work the Inverclyde and Ayrshire services meanwhile the other half work the Argyle Line services with only a few operating the North Clyde Line services.November to December 2010
With the Class 380 being introduced on the Inverclyde and Ayrshire line all Class 318's will be gradually pushed onto Argyle and North Clyde Line services.December to March 2010
With only a few units still working the Inverclyde and Ayrshire line as the Airdrie Bathgate Line opens the Class 318's and ((Class 320/3)) will be pushed off of the North Clyde Line and work all services on the Argyle LineJuly 2011 onwards
With all Class 380 units introduced all the Class 318's are off the Inverclyde and Ayrshire Line and operate on the Argyle and North Clyde LineSee Also
