Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvements Package

Introduction
The Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvements Package was announced by the Transport Minister, Stewart Stevenson, on 27th September 2007. This package of measures to improve services between Edinburgh and Glasgow was formulated as part of the Strategic Transport Projects Review that Transport Scotland are progressing with their consultant, Jacobs.
The proposal
The package includes a number of infrastructure improvements:
- A new station at Gogar to interchange with Edinburgh Tram and Edinburgh Airport. this opened in December 2016
- A new chord between the Fife lines and the Winchburgh Chord to allow services from Glasgow to call at Gogar
- Electrification of the Edinburgh to Glasgow via Falkirk High line, including diversionary routes via Falkirk Grahamston and Cumbernauld, as well as extending the electrification north to Stirling, Dunblane and Alloa.
- An increase in the number of services between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

- In 2015, the main line was in the process of electrification between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
- From March to August 2016, Glasgow queen street was closed to allow improvements work in relation with electrification.
- In late 2016/early 2017, the main line was almost finished to allow the introduction of the new class 385s on the route in 2017.
- In December 2017, the electrification of the main line was completed. Allowing class 380s to run between Edinburgh and Glasgow from December 2017 with full introduction of class 385s from July 2018. Parts of the mainline around larbert and grangemouth have begun to getting masts installed.
