LNER Class B1

The LNER class B1 were 2-cyclinder steam locomotives with a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement, designed by Edward Thompson for mixed traffic use. Introduced on LNER in 1942, construction continued after nationalisation as BR with a total of 410 built by 1952, 290 of them by NBL in Glasgow.

  • Two class B1 locos have been preserved and restored to main line running, 61264 and 61306.

  • 61264, featured on The Jacobite steam service between Fort William & Mallaig in the years 1999 to 2006.

  • Running in LNER green livery as 1264 in 1999, loco 61264 was used on the Jacobite, sharing duties with 8F 48151.
  • At the end of the 1999 season the B1 was involved in the Highland Railway Festival trains.


  • During the 2001 Jacobite Season, 61264 was running chimney towards Fort William.
  • The end of season 'Highland Rail Festival' charter trains featured B1 61264 and K1 62005 coupled tender to tender.
    • Saturday 6th October 62005 & 61264 ran Fort William - Crianlarich - Oban - Taynuilt - Oban

    • Sunday 7th October 62005 & 61264 ran Oban - Westerton (then ECS forward to Carlisle)


  • September 4, 2005, 61264 hauled a Railway Touring Company charter from Fort William to Glasgow Queen Street. <Flickr>.

  • The B1's 2006 season was a trouble one. It arrived at Fort William on 25th of May. In mid-June it required 80 small tubes replacing after boiler problems, then shortly after returning to service it suffered serious damage to its left cylinder. It was return south for repairs, hauled from Fort William to Carnforth by 5972 'Olton Hall' (in Hogwarts Railways livery) on 25th July. <SMugMug - train at Beattock>.
