The Plan

The original plan was for the Class 380s to gradually enter service on Glasgow Central - Gourock/Wemyss Bay and Glasgow Central - Ardrossan Harbour services from October 2010. From December 2010, the majority of Ayrshire and Inverclyde services were meant to be 380s, with 23 diagrams, plus four Ayrshire and Inverclyde diagrams covered by Class 318s and one will be covered by a Class 314. From May 2011, the intention was for the remaining 380s to enter service on Ayrshire and Inverclyde and also North Berwick and Dunber.

The Reality

The first 380 entered service on 8th December when 380111 worked 1Z33 16:26 Paisley Gilmour Street - Ayr additional service. This was followed on 9th December when 380102 and 380001 worked 2K33 15:30 Glasgow Central - Ayr, 1K38 16:43 Ayr - Glasgow and 2K37 18:00 Glasgow - Ayr in public service.

Until early March 2011, no more than four 380s were in service on any one day, working several peak time services between Glasgow, Ayr and Largs.

From early 2011, up to nine 380s were in service on any one day, with the first units in service to Gourock and on the Cathcart Circle.
